COMPARISON OF STUDENTS SPENDING PATTERNS BETWEEN COUNTRIES
Abstract
Russian and foreign students' expenditures are analyzed in the article. Kazan students’ expenditures were taken as the average for Russia during the study. Students' expenditures per month in some countries and financial support from the governments are considered in the article.
Keywords: costs, expenditures, expenses, money spending, students.
Areas of spending available cash resources - one of the problems relating to absolutely everyone. It is especially relevant for young people enrolled in higher education institutions, both in Russia and foreign countries. The main costs are the costs for meals, accommodation, transport services, clothes, books and entertaining. These items of the students’ budget expenses are the same everywhere. Therefore, we will focus on the comparison of the above mentioned costs in Kazan and in foreign countries.
An integral part of each student's budget is food expenses. Let’s consider the average prices in Kazan universities’ canteens and in foreign universities’ ones. Three-course dinner will cost students 160 rubles (2.3 euros) in universities of Kazan. In France meal costs 220 rubles (3.2 euros). In Germany and the United States - about 137 rubles (2 euros or 2.24 dollars) [4]. Thus it could be seen that the difference in the prices of food is indistinguishable.
The next item of comparing is living costs. Monthly payment for a room accommodation in the campus of Kazan is about 360 rubles (5.25 euros). Accommodation in Germany and France’s campuses ranges from 6850 (100 euros) to 20550 rubles (300 euros) per month. For Canadian students accommodation will cost 38360 – 45670 rubles (630 - 750 dollars) per month [5]. And Danish students have to pay 22920 – 55000 rubles (2500-6000 DKK) monthly [3]. In contrast to these countries hostel accommodation in Italy in most cases is not available [4].
Another aspect of student life is fare payment. Public transport costs are about 6 000 rubles (87 euros) per semester in Kazan, which is by 2 000 rubles (29 euros) more than in Germany, where students can save up because of a single pass [4]. Thanks to it students do not get discount for travel, but they are able to use any public transport for the certain payment during definite period of time without limit. Danish students pay not so much too: 0 – 11280 rubles (0-1230 DKK) per month [3]. But In the United States and France fare is quite high and costs 12330 rubles (180 euros or 200 dollars). Thus, we can conclude that the transport services for Kazan students are one of minimals in terms of value in comparison with foreign countries.
Copybooks are inseparable component of the process of learning. It is really a good point that books are given freely for students of Kazan’s universities. Situation in some countries is not the same and young people enrolled in higher education institution have to pay for copybooks. Canadian students pay 7600 – 15200 rubles (125-250 dollars) per month for books [5]. Danish students – 3660 rubles (400 DKK) monthly and British ones – about 2350 rubles (25 pounds) per month [1][3].
Comparing expenses for clothes is one more item of our research. How much money is spent per month for shopping? Kazan students spend about 3000 rubles (49 dollar) for clothes. British youth spends 3760 rubles (40 pounds) per month in average , and Danish students- 1830 rubles (200 DKK) [1][3].
Students’ life is impossible to imagine without entertaining aspect. So it should be included as one more area of spending money. Russian students’ costs for leisure are about 1500 rubles (24 dollar) per month in average. In Great Britain students spend 4700 rubles (50 pounds) monthly [1]. 1830 rubles (200 DKK) – is the cost for entertainment in Denmark [3].
Summing up let’s consider shares of above mentioned expenses in general structure. Kazan students’ expenses per month:
-41.9 % of all expenses are costs for food (4500 rub)
-2.1%- accommodation costs (360 rub)
-14%- transport services’ expenses (1500 rub)
-28 %- expenses for clothes (3000 rub)
-14% - costs for entertaining (1500 rub)
Total amount of expenses per month including all components is 10 860 rubles. Total amount of expenses including the first three items is 6360 rubles
Structure of expenses for French students [4]:
- 20.2%- costs for food (96 euro)
- 42% - accommodation expenses (200 euro)
- 37.8% - payment for transport services (180 euro)
Total amount of expenses per month including mentioned above items is 476 euro (32600 rubles).
Generalizing all that was said we can emphasize that these spendings of Kazan students compared with students at the educational institutions of the developed countries are economically acceptable.
However it is impossible not to remark that everyday expenses entirely are high enough especially for non-working young people. Therefore governments carry out various financial support projects such as scholarship, meal cards, state educational grants and loans, alumni communities which assist students in distress.
Within the framework of our research we conducted a survey and find out whether Kazan students were satisfied with governmental support programs or not. 25 per cent of respondents said that financial support projects were widely implementable and developed properly. Another respondents answered that governmental projects should be more open and accessible.
Development of the system of students’ social support, along with other institutional changes in higher education, is the key to building an innovative economy and return our country to the world's leading powers.
