TEACHING APPROACHES OF PEDAGOGICS TOWARDS PROMOTION OF STUDENTS’ ACTIVENESS IN THE QUANG BINH UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The activeness of learners is one of the direct determinants of the learning quality, creates core competencies to apply knowledge in solving life situations, surviving, adapting and developing. Based on a data analysis, comments and evaluation of the current status, an experiment was conducted in a serious and scientific way, from which a number of teaching approaches of pedagogics towards promotion of students’ activeness were proposed.

Keywords: Quang Binh University; Lecturers; students; active teaching approaches and techniques of pedagogics.

  1. INTRODUCTION

In the next decade, Vietnam education will be developed in a complex world with rapid changes. Globalization and international integration in education have become an objectively inevitable trend which directly affects the global education. The international context above makes the educational philosophy of the 21st century change profoundly. This philosophy takes "regular lifelong learning" as the main principle which is based on four general objectives: "Learn to know, learn to do, learn to live together and learn to survive" and aims at building a "learning society".

The Directive No.15/1999/CT-GD-ĐT dated on 20/4/2009 of the Ministry of Education and Training emphasized: "Renewing teaching and learning approaches in schools in order to promote the activeness, initiative, creativity and self-learning ability of pupils and students". [4]. These are difficulties and obstacles not only for lecturers and students in the Quang Binh University but also in a host of universities across the country.

  1. APPROACH

2.1. Theoretical research group:

Purpose: Research to address theoretical issues such as: clarifying terminologies, concepts, nature of active teaching and learning as well as factors affecting students' activeness.

Measure: Analyze, synthesize, systematize, and generalize knowledge and theory related to the research topic by studying written materials of Pedagogics teaching towards promotion of students’ activeness, which contribute to solve all three tasks of the topic.

2.2. Practical Research Group

2.2.1. Pedagogical observation approach

Purpose: Use the observation approach to figure out the teaching methods of lecturers when teaching pedagogics towards promotion of activeness of lecturers, at the same time, gather information about the expression of student’s activeness in learning pedagogics.

Measure: Attend classes as observers

2.2.2. Survey approach

Purpose: Use the survey method to assess the status of teaching pedagogics towards promotion of students’ activeness in the Quang Binh University.

Measure: Develop and conduct a survey for management staff, lecturers and students.

2.2.3. Pedagogical Experiment Approach

Purpose: Experimentalize the process to prove the initial assumption: "If we could propose a suitable pedagogics teaching approach consistent with psychological characteristics of students, stimulate their learning demand and inspiration, promote their self-awareness and independence, we would promote learners’ activeness and contribute to improve students’ learning outcomes of pedagogics in  the Quang Binh University."

Measure: Develop a process using pedagogics teaching methods and techniques towards promotion of students’ activeness in the Quang Binh University.

III. RESEARCH OUTCOMES

Through the research process, we have drawn a number of pedagogics teaching methods towards promotion of learners’ activeness. These approaches are: Influence on demand and interest, promote learners’ activeness in pedagogics; Set up objectives of pedagogics teaching in an open way; Develop pedagogics teaching content; Select and use methods and techniques of teaching pedagogics actively; Frequently use modern teaching facilities for pedagogics; Develop self-learning capability in pedagogics for students; Build a positive learning environment for pedagogics; Renew testing and assessing methods of learning outcome for pedagogics. Within the scope of this journal, we focus on two measures which have been successfully applied in the Quang Binh University.

3.1. Objective design for pedagogics teaching in an open way

* Purpose and significance of the measure

To create personality models which meet the expectations of modern society. Therefore, it is necessary to redesign objectives for pedagogics teaching in an open way.

* Content of the measure

During the teaching process of pedagogics, apart from designing objectives related to knowledge, skills, attitudes, lecturers are required to include soft skills in the design.

* Implementation method

- Educate students of Education with basic soft skills such as adaptation, emotion expression in a professional manner, teamwork, leadership, lifelong learning, information searching and management, critical thinking and problem solving.

- Develop teaching objectives in three areas: knowledge, skills and attitudes in order to see which objectives the lecture has achieved. To be specific:

Knowledge: What do learners achieve? What do they know and understand? It is necessary to help learners receive knowledge in different levels:

Listen => memorize => comprehend

Skill: What can learners do? Can they practice? Are they able to apply their knowledge to solve practical problems? It is necessary to develop a skill for learners in different levels from “seeing” to “doing” and “mastering” as the highest level.

Attitude: What are learners’ attitudes toward a lecture? What do they desire after a lesson? Must create an attitude system for learners from low to high, seeing pedagogics “necessary” to “enjoyable” and “passionate” as the highest level

- Survey on learning needs of learners and society needs before building targets

- Adjust learning objectives towards streamlining and gradually shifting to capacity building for students

* Implementation condition:

- Lecturers have to clearly define objectives and combine closed-ended objectives with open-ended ones flexibly

3.2. Selection and use of active teaching approaches and techniques of pedagogics.

* Purpose and significance of the measure

To specify the teaching content and create interest for students during the pedagogics teaching process through selecting and using teaching approaches and techniques

*Content of the measure:

During the pedagogics teaching process, lecturers are required to choose and combine teaching methods and techniques, especially pay attention to use active teaching methods and techniques to exploit knowledge.

* Implementation method

- The pedagogics teaching process should be based on objectives, teaching content, learners and practical conditions to select suitable learning methods and techniques.

- Teaching methods effectively, particularly problem raising method, lecturers have to master the structure of teaching methods to raise problems, then set a "trap'' for learners to fall into a "conflict status" between the new tasks and old knowledge which cannot use to solve problems. The learners have to mobilize new knowledge and approaches to address.

- Learners should develop social skills when implementing the cooperative learning technique

- Situations for students to solve need to satisfy requirements such as: consistent with the lesson topic; consistent with awareness level and life experience of students; situations can be expressed by text or video, or a combination of the two

*Implementation conditions:

- Lecturers should know thoroughly ages and educational levels of students

- Understand the features of each teaching approach and technique as well as exploit them well.

- Have the support in facilities

  1. CONCLUSION

The industrialization - modernization of the country is ongoing strongly, which directly influences on education, forces education to "reproduce" a labor force leading the nation. This is implemented by redesigning objectives, restructuring contents, selecting approaches, means and forms of teaching as well as testing and assessing learning outcomes towards promotion of students’ activeness in universities in general and for pedagogics in the Quang Binh University in particular.
